Mahindra South Africa Opens Advanced Vehicle Assembly Plant in Durban
Mahindra South Africa has officially opened its new state-of-the-art Vehicle Assembly Facility at the Dube TradePort Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in KwaZulu-Natal. The facility, located near Mahindra’s original Durban assembly site, opened in 2018, represents a significant expansion as Mahindra enters its third decade in South Africa.

Rajesh Gupta, CEO of Mahindra South Africa, explained: “Our original facility played a pivotal role in establishing our local footprint. With growing demand for our locally assembled Pik Up range, we needed a facility with the scale, flexibility and technology to meet future growth while maintaining world-class quality.”
Increased Production Capacity And Localisation
The Durban facility can assemble over 1,000 Pik Up single- and double-cab vehicles per month, with the ability to expand as demand increases. It is designed to accommodate new models planned for the coming years and increase the use of locally sourced components.
Mahindra’s global engineering teams are collaborating with South African suppliers to support greater localisation and industrial growth, while also creating jobs and developing skills within the local automotive sector.
Strategic Investment In South Africa
Earlier in 2025, Mahindra partnered with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) to explore a full-scale manufacturing plant in South Africa. Insights from the Durban facility will guide this initiative and strengthen Mahindra’s position in the region.
