In a special ceremony held at Mahindra’s assembly plant in the Dube TradePort special economic zone, KwaZulu-Natal, Mahindra South Africa is celebrating the production of its 20,000th locally assembled Pik Up vehicle. The event showcased the 20,000th model – a Pik Up S6 4×4 – symbolising the company’s progress since opening in 2018.
This is a standout moment for the company’s growth and commitment to the South African market, as it gears up for an exciting new phase of expansion.
Exponential Growth Since 2018
Mahindra SA’s logistics head, Arnold Reddy, highlighted the plant’s impressive growth trajectory. Starting with a production rate of about 200 units per month in 2018, the facility now produces upwards of 700 units monthly. This growth has far surpassed the initial annual production goal of 2,500 Pik Up models set when the plant first opened.
The journey began with the assembly of single-cab Pik Up models. Over time, the company expanded its capabilities to include double cab and special edition models, such as the popular Karoo Editions. Today, all Pik Up models are assembled at the South African facility, showcasing Mahindra’s commitment to local production.
Since it entered the South African market in 2004, Mahindra has grown to become a significant player in the automotive landscape. The company now boasts a dealer network of 90 dealers across the country, supported by its training facility for technical, sales and marketing skills.
New Models And Market Strategy
Demonstrating its long-term commitment to the South African market, Mahindra has announced plans for a brand-new assembly facility.
Set to break ground next month, this new plant will also be located in the Dube TradePort. Upon completion in 2025, it will have the capacity to produce nearly 1,300 units per month, almost doubling the current output.
The new facility, developed in partnership with Automotive Investment Holdings (AIH) Logistics, will not only increase production capacity but also improve stock-building capabilities.
Mahindra SA is poised to “re-energise” its presence in the country with the launch of new models. October will see the introduction of the 3XO model, described by Reddy as a “shifting point” for Mahindra in South Africa. Additionally, a refreshed version of the XUV700 model is on the horizon.
Looking further ahead, Mahindra is exploring the possibility of bringing the Global Pik Up model to South Africa, potentially by 2026. This model was showcased to the South African market in Cape Town in August last year, indicating Mahindra’s commitment to introducing cutting-edge vehicles to the local market.
As Mahindra South Africa enters its next phase of growth, the company is well-positioned to continue its upward trajectory. With its commitment to local production, job creation, and market-specific models, Mahindra is solidifying its position as a key player in South Africa’s automotive industry.
