Mahindra has officially captured the hearts of adventurous South Africans, with its Scorpio-N claiming two top honours at the 2024 Old Mutual Insure South African Car of the Year Competition this May.
The Scorpio-N, a true embodiment of adventure and versatility, emerged as the undisputed winner in the Adventure SUV of the Year category, outshining its rivals. But the accolades didn’t stop there – in a surprising twist, the Scorpio-N also clinched the coveted Motor Enthusiast of the Year Award.
Stringent Evaluation Process
The Scorpio-N emerged as the clear winner among 18 finalists meticulously selected from a pool of 80 qualifying vehicles. This is no easy feat as the South African Guild of Mobility Journalists (SAGMJ), is renowned for their stringent evaluation process.
Over several gruelling days, the finalists were put through their paces, subjected to rigorous dynamic and static testing, and scrutinised against their competitors and market performance. Detailed market share statistics and customer feedback from Lightstone Auto, the official automotive industry data aggregator, further informed the evaluation process.
Rajesh Gupta, CEO of Mahindra South Africa, beamed with pride, stating, “This major award truly humbles us. It signals a new era that follows two decades of investment in our South African operations, our dealer network, and our vehicle range to ensure that we offer a truthful partnership of man and machine in both the SUV and LCV market.”
The Scorpio-N – Perfect For Adventure
Powered by a tried-and-tested 2.2-litre mHawk turbodiesel engine, the Scorpio-N packs a punch with 128.6kW of power and a robust 400Nm of torque. Mated to a smooth 6-speed automatic torque converter transmission, it offers both 4×2 and 4×4 drive configurations, ensuring versatility on and off the beaten track.
The Scorpio-N also stands out as one of the most affordable 7-seat off-roading SUVs in the market, making it an attractive choice for adventure-seekers and families alike. Mahindra’s commitment to delivering honest and real value for money has been the driving force behind its success. The Scorpio-N embodies this philosophy.

A Milestone For Mahindra
This triumph marks a significant milestone for the Indian automotive giant, solidifying its position as a force to be reckoned with in the South African market.
Since its establishment in South Africa in 2004, Mahindra has embarked on an ambitious growth trajectory, solidifying its presence locally. Today, its expansive dealer network extends to every major metropolitan area, town, and even remote outposts, ensuring accessibility for customers countrywide.
Complementing this widespread reach is a state-of-the-art vehicle assembly facility in Durban, currently operating at full capacity, and a massive parts warehouse that facilitates a seamless daily parts delivery system.
Mahindra’s unwavering and strategic investment in its South African operations, regarded as the company’s second home beyond India, has yielded remarkable dividends.
